Acquedolci

Acquedolci is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 5781 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Acquedolci is located 106 km west of Messina on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture, fishing and tourism.

The neighboring municipalities are Caronia, San Fratello and Sant'Agata di Militello.

History

The town was founded in 1922 after a landslide in San Fratello. The place was until 1969 a district of San Fratello. Since the 15th century, it is a tuna fishing area and a loading station for loading grain onto ships.

Attractions

In the village is a castle from the Middle Ages, this was completely rebuilt over time. Near the town is the cave of San Teodoro. This is an archaeological site of objects from the Stone Age that are up to 20,000 years old. Noteworthy is the discovery of the skeletons of four men and three women, including the skeleton of the oldest Sicilian, stone tools, jewelry made of shark teeth and bite marks. The finds are exhibited in the Museo Geologico Gemmellaro in Palermo, providing conclusions about the lifestyle of the oldest inhabitants of Sicily.
