Acropora

Acropora nasuta

The Acropora are the most species-rich genus of stony corals ( Scleractinia ). While there are only three species in the Caribbean, and the Acropora to Hawaii missing, are the Australian stony corals specialist Veron alone for 73 species in eastern Australia. The exact number of species throughout the Indo-Pacific is unknown, as there is for the networked evolution of this genus a variety of shapes, whose species status can not be determined.

Features

The polyps of Acropora are only one to three millimeters long. It is characterized by a larger polyp at the end of each branch. The Endpolypen often also have a special coloring and give the usually rather brownish coral colony color. All polyps have six tentacles that they stretch out at night to catch plankton.

In German it is called the Acropora depending on growth form often antler coral and table corals. Like most other stony corals they live in a symbiotic relationship with algae ( zooxanthellae ) that supply the Acropora with nutrients. They are therefore dependent on dark locations. Acropora dominated in many places the reefs and form veritable monoculture. They grow very fast and have an estimated share of 25 % of the Riffbildung. In Barbados we have detected an annual increase of 26 centimeters in Acropora cervicornis. While the flowers animals in shallow water on the reef roofs usually grow bush or antler -shaped, they often form on the reef walls table-shaped sticks and grow to still absorb as much light, horizontally outward.

Aquarium maintenance

Acropora can also be grown in well-kept marine aquariums. You can reach here with good water conditions increases length of 16 inches a year. By fragmentation of larger colonies they can be easily propagated artificially. Meanwhile, there are many coral breeders, multiply the Acropora and try if possible to get colored shapes. Today it is no longer necessary to import from Acropora coral reefs.
