Adalberon (bishop of Laon)

Adalbero of Laon, called Ascelin, (c. 947, † 1030 in the Abbey of Saint -Vincent, Laon ) was Bishop of Laon 977-1030.

He was from the Lorraine family of Wigeriche and was the son of Reginar of Bastogne, a brother of the Count of Verdun Gottfried of prisoners and Adalbero, the Archbishop of Rheims.

After he started his training in Gorze, he was 969-974 students Gerbert of Aurillac, later Pope Sylvester II, in Reims. Since he was a faithful follower of the Carolingian king Lothar, made him this to his 974 -Chancellor and on 16 January 977, after the death of Bishop Roricon on 20 December 976, the bishop of Laon.

Shortly after taking office as bishop was rumored about adultery of Lothar's wife Emma with Adalbero of Laon. His uncle Adalbero of Reims called together a synod in which the innocence of Adalbero and Emma was found. Tommy's brother Charles, who had spread the rumor had to go into exile. It was made of 977 Otto II Duke of Lower Lorraine and so pulled over to the side of his brother Lothar warring Ottos.

After the death of Lothair ( 986 ) and his son Louis V ( 987 ) Hugh Capet was chosen from the family of Robertiner king. He founded the new dynasty of the Capetians. It was the claim to the throne of Charles of Lower Lorraine, the last surviving Carolingian heir, ignored. The following year, Karl took up arms to enforce his claim to the crown. Adalbero of Laon was like his uncle Adalbero of Reims, of Hugh Capet was crowned, on the side of the new dynasty. When I succeeded Charles to take with a coup de Laon, he was able to capture his enemy, the Dowager Queen Emma, and Adalbero of Laon. Adalbero of Laon escaped from the prison, then reconciled, however, with Karl and was returned to his diocese. He gained confidence and Charles swore fealty to him, but the end of March 991 he told Karl and opened at night the city gates of Laon troops Hugos. Karl was caught sleeping and arrested with his wife and his children. He remained until his death in prison. Adalbero was for posterity the archetype of a ruthless traitor. He was given the nickname vetulus traditor (old traitors ).

993 to Adalbero allied with Count Odo I of Blois, to Hugh Capet and his son Robert to King Otto III. deliver. 998 he was deposed at the Synod of Pavia.

His date of death is not known. The July 19, 1030 is called, but also ( in the necrology of Saint Vincent in Laon ) a January 27, possibly of the year 1031. He was buried in the abbey church of Saint Vincent in Laon.
