Adalgott was a Cistercian monk of the monastery of Clairvaux, and a pupil of Bernard of Clairvaux. In 1150 he was already advanced in years, was elected bishop of Chur. He was ordained on February 4, 1151 in Mainz, as the Diocese of Chur belonged to the church in Mainz province since the Treaty of Verdun ( 843).

Despite his advanced age, he was an energetic and reformist bishop. In one of his records he says about himself that he had for the monasteries and to care for the poor over the burden of the episcopal office for the benefit " ( " ego, Algotus Curiensis episcopus, per utilitate monasteriorum et cura pauperum Pontificale onus suscipiens ": BUB 1, No. 330, 1154 ). He promoted and reformed the monasteries in the diocese territory and devoted himself to caring for the poor.

With this award Adalgott goods lifted the convent of St. Peter in Mistail to legally and possessing moderate, since it already several decades was unsettled after a period of decline and reorganization seemed impossible.

Adalgott also looked after the reform and revitalization of other monasteries of his diocese:

  • He presented the monastery discipline in the episcopal proprietary monastery Cazis restores put it under the management of a Premonstratensian Canons of St. Luzi and adorned it with donations. Pope Adrian IV took the monastery under his protection in 1156 and confirmed its possessions.

Together with Ulrich III. from Scuol to the Adalgott maintained good relations, he provided through donations for a material improvement of the monastery. On July 13, 1160 Adalgott could consecrate the crypt of the monastery church of Marienberg.

Adalgott likely to have been buried in Chur. However, his grave has not been preserved. After a short tenure, he left behind a child diocese with a renewed and consolidated monasticism. The decision to rebuild the cathedral of Chur (before 1178-1272 ) probably also goes back to Adalgott. Since 1646 ( Chur proprium ) Adalgott was worshiped liturgically in the diocese of Chur as a saint and Cistercians also received him in their calendar of saints.
