Adam Åšmigielski

Adam Śmigielski SDB ( born December 24, 1933, Przemysl, Province Lemberg (now Subcarpathian Voivodeship ), Poland, † October 7, 2008 in Sosnowiec, Silesian Voivodeship ) was Bishop of Sosnowiec.

Life

Adam Śmigielski entered as 18- year-old in the seminary of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Krakow. From 1951 to 1953 he studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Krakow and Los Angeles. In 1955 he passed the profession and completed postgraduate studies in Philosophy and Theology in Krakow, Lublin and Warsaw. He received on 30 June 1957, the ordained priest by the bishop of Lublin Piotr Kalwa. In 1979 he received his doctorate at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Jerusalem. From 1975 to 1981 he was rector of the seminary of the Salesians in Krakow. From 1982 to 1986 he was active as a director of the Salesian house in Auschwitz. From 1986 to 1992 he was head of the Order in Wroclaw.

Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1992 the first bishop of the company founded by the Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus 1992 Diocese of Sosnowiec. He received his episcopal consecration of 30 May 1992 Józef Cardinal Glemp, Archbishop of Gniezno; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Franciszek Macharski and Stanislaw Nowak, Archbishop of Częstochowa. His motto was Da mihi animas cetera tolle ( "Give me souls, take everything else !") - The motto of his order.

He was awarded the honorary citizenship of the towns Sosnowiec (2007), Jaworzno (2007), bendin (2008) and Czeladź (2008).

Adam Śmigielski died of complications from pancreatic cancer in St. Barbara Hospital, Sosnowiec.
