Adelaide of Austria

Adelaide of Austria, full name Adelheid Franziska Marie Rainera Elisabeth Clotilde of Austria ( born June 3, 1822 in Milan, † January 20, 1855 in Turin) was Queen of Sardinia.

Life

She was the daughter of Archduke Rainer Joseph, Viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia and brother of Emperor Franz II, and Princess Maria Elisabeth of Savoy - Carignan in Milan to the world.

On April 12, 1842 was in Stupinigi with her cousin, the Crown Prince and later King of Sardinia ( 1861, King of Italy ), Victor Emmanuel II, married. Her husband, however, did not change after the wedding his dissolute life and had numerous love affairs, illegitimate children, and led incidentally a lasting relationship with his longtime mistress Rosa Vercellana.

The couple had eight children together:

  • Clothilda Maria ( born March 2, 1843 † June 25, 1911 ) - married with Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte ( 1822-1891 ), known as Plon- Plon
  • Umberto I. (* March 14, 1844; † July 29, 1900 ), King of Italy,
  • Amadeus I. Ferdinand Maria (* May 30, 1845; † January 18, 1890 ), King of Spain,
  • Oddone Eugenio ( born July 11, 1846 † January 22, 1866 ), Duke of Montferrat,
  • Maria Pia (* October 16, 1847; † July 5, 1911 ) - 1862 married to Ludwig I, King of Portugal,
  • Carlo Alberto ( born June 2 in 1851; † June 28, 1854 ), Duke of Chablais,
  • Vittorio Emanuele (* / † July 7, 1852 ), Prince of Savoy, and
  • Vittorio Emanuele ( born January 8, 1855 † May 17, 1855 ), Duke of Chablais

After the birth of her sixth son Vittorio Emanuele Adelheid died before the age of 32 in childbirth and was buried in Turin in the Basilica di Superga.

Her husband married after her death, his mistress Rosa Vercellana.
