Adjustable gastric band

A gastric band (english gastric band) is a medical treatment for morbid obesity, which is not treatable by diet and conservative treatment measures. Along with other methods, the gastric band belongs to the spectrum of bariatric surgery, the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. It is the last resort of choice when conservative methods have failed for weight loss. The indications for gastric rein is given from a body mass index = body mass index of at least 35-40.

By concentrating the stomach diameter in the entrance area, a permanent significant weight reduction can be achieved. To this end, an adjustable silicone band is placed around the stomach fundus in laparoscopic surgery. The diameter of the opening can be changed by filling in the strip with liquid, an appropriate access ( port chamber ) is placed in the abdominal wall or on the sternum.

In Germany, the health insurance companies cover the cost of gastric banding when the medical necessity has been established. This is usually the case if the following conditions are met:

  • BMI > 40 or BMI > 35 with serious side effects ( such as diabetes, joint diseases etc )
  • All conservative methods of treatment used ( last resort )
  • Surgical risk may not exceed the risk associated with other possible interventions
  • Patient is informed and motivated

Effect of the gastric band

According to various studies, the following effects of the gastric band will be accepted on the patient:
