Adlai Stevenson I

Adlai Ewing Stevenson, Sr. ( born October 23, 1835 Christian County, Kentucky, † June 14, 1914 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician. He held office from 1893 to 1897 as the 23rd Vice President of the United States under President Grover Cleveland.

Life

In 1852, Stevenson moved with his parents to Bloomington in Illinois. He attended the local Illinois Wesleyan University and later the Centre College in Danville (Kentucky). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and commenced practice in Metamora.

In the presidential election of 1864 he was one of the Democrats on the Electoral College.
