Adlan Varayev

Adlan Abujewitsch Warajew (Russian Адлан Абуевич Вараев; * 1962) is a former Soviet wrestler.

Career

Adlan Warajew, a Chechen from Grozny began in 1975 at the age of 13 years with the rings. He developed into an outstanding freestyle wrestler and was after he had joined the Soviet Army, member of the Army Sports clubs Grozny. The trainers who were cared for him throughout his career Abdulwahid Warajew, Magomed Daghilow, Aslanbeg Dsgoew, Degu Bagaew and Boris Basaew. His debut on the international wrestling mat he was winning the title at the Junior European Championships 1982 in Leipzig at lightweight.

In 1986, he was in Athens and European champion in the senior welterweight and won in the same year in Budapest Vice Welter champion welterweight title. He lost the final to the outstanding Cuban Raul Cascaret Fonseca on points.

1987 was an exceptionally successful year for Adlan. First, he was in spring in Tampere European champion and then in the fall in Clermont- Ferrand also welterweight champion. At the World Cup he scored this notable victories over Raul Cascaret and the U.S. Olympic champion from 1984 David Schultz.

In the 1988 Olympics he won in Manchester in superior style his third European title, but lost the final at the Olympic Games in Seoul surprisingly the exploven Americans Kenneth Monday with 2:5 points and so won only a silver medal.

After these Olympics Adlan Warajew ended his career Ringer and completed a coach training. He was afterwards for many years coach of the Russian freestyle national team, and is now Vice President of the Russian Federation wrestlers.
