Administrative divisions of Hungary

Hungary is divided into cities ( város ) and municipalities ( község ) in circles ( Jaras ), in counties and regions.

Cities and Towns

Hungary has 3154 communities. Of these, 119 have the rank of a great community and 328 the rank of a city. (As of 1 January 2011)

Circles

The Hungarian administrative unit Jaras ( Mz járasok ) is generally translated with a circle.

At the beginning of the First World War Hungary had on his former area 442 circles. After the Treaty of Trianon, there were about 150 with the territorial expansion 1938-1941, the number of circles rose. As a result of the Paris Peace Conference in 1946, Hungary had once again 150 circles, which were dissolved on 31 December 1983.

1994 divided the Central Statistical Office of Hungary the country to capture certain statistical data in first 138 territorial units called " statistical districts " ( statisztikai körzet ) were designated.

On 1 August 1997, the districts in 150 small areas ( kistérség ) were converted. 2003 the number was increased to 186 and they were also a part of the public responsibilities of local authorities transferred.

1 January 2013 circuits ( járasok ) are introduced after 29- year break. There are now 175

Counties

The historic counties of Hungary emerged around 1000th With the reform of 1950 19 counties were formed. The number of circuits remains unchanged.

Regions

In 1999 were created in seven regions of Hungary, to fulfill obligations to the European Union ( NUTS). These regions are formed from the counties of Hungary and serve primarily statistical purposes.

There are Northern Hungary ( Észak -Magyarország ), Northern Great Plain ( Észak - Alfold ), Southern Great Plain ( Dél- Alfold ), Central Hungary ( Közép -Magyarország ), Central Transdanubia ( Közép Transdanubia ), Western Transdanubia ( Nyugat Transdanubia ) and Southern Transdanubia ( dél Transdanubia )
