Digital Editions is able to open ACSM file formats as they come on German commercial platforms such as Thalia, Libri and others are used. ACSM files contain information about the copy protection (DRM) and the download server (Adobe Content Server), enabling the software to download the protected formats.

Digital Rights Management ( DRM protection )

Digital rights management is used to control the use and distribution of digital media. It finds use in e-books, but is known primarily for use in music, film and software. DRM allows commercial vendors, licenses for the use of protected works to sell. The end user paid for, for the rights of use of the data and not the data itself

For the built- in Adobe Digital Editions ADEPT DRM digital rights management in February 2009, a way of dealing has been published. Here, the copy was not cracked in itself but only extracts the private key. This can then all protected with this key EPUB files completely decrypt and re- save without digital rights management. These new files are thus no longer the restrictions of digital rights management. Remove any personal identifying information remain available.

Availability

The software is available free of charge for the operating systems Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X. The originally announced version for Linux systems is, however, never appeared, and Adobe has removed all reports in this regard. However, it is possible to run Adobe Digital Editions using Wine under Linux. Absence of official USB support in Wine, you should first activate an e-reader under Windows or Mac OS X, then let DRM -protected e-books download under Linux and copy it to the reader. On July 30, 2013 was a security update to version 2.0.1.

Security Issues

In October 2013 was a hacker attack on user databases from Adobe, in which, among other things, identification data of Digital Edition customers were stolen. Affected e-mail addresses and their passwords were published on the Internet.
