Adolf W. Edelsvärd

Adolf Wilhelm Edelsvärd ( born June 28, 1824 in Ostersund, † October 15, 1919 in Stockholm) was a Swedish architect and civil engineer.

Edelsvärd in 1855, a year before the first state route opened, chief architect of the Statens Järnvägars Arkitektkontor ( German architecture office of the State Railways ) Statens Järnvägar (SJ ). During the 40 years that the Edelsvärd was head of the architectural firm of railway, 5,725 buildings were erected at the state railway lines, including 297 station building. Edelsvärd placed great emphasis on the design and functionality of the station building, not only in the important buildings in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, but also in smaller buildings in the province. For the latter, ten standard models were created, which were implemented with minor variations across the country.

Edelsvärd wrote a series of essays on the urban planning. To this end, he created a list of guidelines that should be followed when urban planning. He asked, for example, open spaces and plantings as well as a division of the city by two parallel main streets bordering a park. Furthermore, the most important buildings of the city should ( station and church with him ) are located at the endpoints of the main traffic artery. His ideas were implemented in Nässjö where an esplanade leading from the station to the marketplace and in Hässleholm where the train station and church complete the main road on both sides.
