Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez

Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez ( born December 17, 1915 in Algeciras, Cádiz, Spain Province; † July 8, 2011 in Mexico City) was a Spanish- Mexican philosopher, literary critic and writer who dealt as a university teacher in particular with Marxism and its renewal.

Life

After schooling Sánchez Vázquez studied at the Universidad Central de Madrid, where he was a student of José Ortega y Gasset. Already during his studies he was active in the youth wing of the Partido Comunista de España ( PCE), before he went to the end of the Spanish Civil War exile in Mexico and lived there until his death.

Later, he accepted a professorship of philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico ( UNAM) and taught at this until his retirement. In addition to his teaching, he was primarily concerned with questions about Marxism and saw himself as a critic of orthodox Stalinism. He tried to renew Marxism by humanistic and democratic approaches and wrote to books like Las ideas Estéticas de Marx ( 1965), Estética y Marxismo ( 1970) and Del Socialismo Científico al Socialismo Utópico (1975). He also wrote numerous other works and literary critical writings.

For his scientific achievements, he was awarded the Order del Mérito Civil of Spain. Besides him honorary doctorates from the University of Nueve Léon, Universidad de Guadalajara ( UdeG ), University of Cádiz, Complutense University of Madrid (2000) and the National Distance University ( UNED) were the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BPRD ), awarded. In 2004 he was also an honorary citizen of the province of Malaga.
