Adrien Philippe

Jean -Adrien Philippe ( * 1815 in La Bazoche - Gouet, † January 5, 1894 in Plain Palais ) was a French watchmaker and inventor.

Life and inventions

Philippe, who was born the son of a watchmaker in France and received his training with his father. From 1836 he worked in Le Locle and in London. He invented the Remontoiruhr 1842, the first pocket watch with stem wind. In 1844 he was awarded for this invention, a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair, 1845, he had them patented. In 1851 he married the Frenchwoman Marie Anne Bailly. The marriage produced five children. In 1863 he published his work Les montres sans clef in Geneva and Paris. Another revolutionary invention Philippe was a mechanism for a perpetual calendar, which no longer had to be corrected manually. This mechanism was patented in 1889.
