The College Board, a non-profit organization in New York City, the Advanced Placement Program performs since 1955. Furthermore, it supports teachers of AP courses and universities through the development of policies and the allocation of teaching resources. These activities are funded entirely from the fee, which requires students to pay to drop the final exam of their respective AP course.

In 2006, one million students at one of the final tests of the Advanced Placement Programs in part. The courses themselves are School of the United States offered in almost every high. However, to also give the students of non- participating schools and students receive which home schooling the chance to store an AP Exam, the College Board does not require participation in an AP course for the final exam.

In the school year 2007/2008 the exam still cost $ 80 per trade. However, the participation in the AP program is often subsidized by state or local programs. It is also possible that students qualify for financial support. In this case, the price is usually lowered by $ 25.

Assessment

AP exams are valued differently than is usual in the American education system. The results are based on a numerical scale ( 1-5 ) instead of the usual scale with the letters A to F (excluding E) measured. The result of 3 marks while the value required to pass the exam. General have 5 results following meaning:

  • 5: Very well qualified
  • 4: Good qualified
  • 3: Qualified
  • 2: You may qualify
  • 1: No recommendation

The combination of the number of points and the result is by no means absolute in the AP exam. The assignment is made using a normal distribution, that is, from the distribution of all points scored will decide how many points, for example, the result is assigned 3.

The results are mainly used for high school graduates to adopt some of their standard required college courses, if they have already demonstrated their skills in a subject in an AP exam test. From what may be adopted to a conclusion College courses, each college decides itself usually results 4-5 are sufficient.

Some high schools allow you to override the note, which reaches the students in each course with the result of the AP exam (if better). The translation of exam results and course grade will then be held as follows:

  • 5: A
  • 4: B
  • 3: C
  • 2: D
  • 1: F
