Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; or, Held for Ransom is an American silent film. It was directed by J. Stuart Blackton for Vitagraph Studios.

Background

It was the second movie based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes Baffled by the film of 1900. He is usually seen as a first attempt to film a serious Holmes adaptation.

The screenplay by Theodore Liebler includes elements from the novel The Sign of the Four.

Published on October 7, 1950, to Maurice Costello as Sherlock Holmes, Kyrle Bellew as John Watson and J. Barney Sherry. For Costello, it was the first role before he became a so-called matinee idol.

Although it is sometimes claimed that the film was lost, are still fragments in the Library of Congress on paper yet. It was shot on 35mm black and white film and has a length of 725 meters on a roll.
