ADX (file format)

ADX is a lossy encoding audio format of the company CRI Middleware. It has been used since the release of the Dreamcast by Sega. ADX audio is encoded into ADPCM format.

ADX audio is mostly used in video games as background music, both in PC games as well as for Gamecube, Dreamcast, Wii, PlayStation 2 and XBox.

Format

ADX is similar to Windows ' default audio format RIFF WAVE (. Wav). Following sampling rates are supported: 8000 Hz, 32000 Hz and 48000 Hz and a resolution of 16th ADX is very economical in CPU resource requirements and only produces a load of 1 %. ADX is only suitable for music or voice recording as a compressed and 1/4 music information. The ADX format is constantly evolving, so there are different types, for example, Type 3, Type 4 and Type 5.

Special

With ADX loop start and end points can be defined. With an appropriate encoder, it is possible to cut the end to reduce the ADX file on.

In order to set start and end points of the loop, you have to apply, for example, samples an accurate time format.

Example: Start point: 1000 samples, endpoint: 10000 samples. A simple time format eg 1:02 would be too inaccurate and there would be sloping walkways.

Other formats

AHX

AHX was designed for voice recordings. It supports sampling rates 8000-48000 Hz and a resolution of 16 bits. AHX can be encoded in mono only. The compression is enormous because AHX audio information at 1 /8 to 1 /10 of the output compressed. An MP3 file that is about 3 megabytes in size would be recoded as an AHX file have a size of 2 MB or even just 1.5 MB and little loss of quality.

ACX

ACX is a container format exclusively for sound effects for video games. ACX is not suitable for music. The ACX files must have a sampling rate of 8000-48000 Hz, 16 bit, mono.

AFS

( Not to be confused with ASF - Advanced Streaming Format by Windows) AFS is a container format for various file formats. It is suitable for video, audio, image and binary files. Each zip file gets an ID number assigned to call them later in the game can. AFS files do not contain any compression and useable as an overview or as a file packer.

AIX

AIX is a multi- track format and does not contain any compression. In AIX raw audio file can be summarized as traces. It is possible to pack single 5.1 surround sound WAVE files (FL, FR, C, SL, SR ). Thus, the AIX format supports 5.1 -channel surround sound. The individual tracks can be accessed and played in the game ( eg for different languages).
