Aechmea

Aechmea mariae - reginae, a Trichterbromelie with their decorative inflorescence.

The Aechmea is a genus of the subfamily Bromelioideae in the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ). In this genus there are about 250 to 300 species. The Greek word means aechme spearhead and so one occasionally finds the name Lanz bromeliads for this genus. The best-known species of the genus Aechmea fasciata is, it is also called Lanz rosette.

Description

The Aechmea species are perennial herbaceous plants. This hopper or tank bromeliads usually grow as epiphytes. There are species of very different size: from small Aechmea recurvata with funnel diameter and height of about 20 cm to 2 m species with funnel diameter and inflorescences, which are 2 meters high. The rough leaves are always on the edge reinforced (as with all representatives of the Bromelioideae ). In the leaf hoppers often collect large amounts of water. In many craters there are small areas containing several animal species as well as algae and aquatic plants.

The flowers sit on many of the most respectable, long-lasting inflorescences ( inflorescences ), they can be simple or compound. At the inflorescences often sit bright colored bracts ( bracts ); it dominates the color red (mostly with a blue component ).

The blooms are triple. The color of the flowers ( often they are blue or bluish - red) indicate the strong and nectar secretion that hummingbirds are the pollinators. The three sepals are fused into a short tube, and usually have a spike tip, they are rarely dull. The three petals are fused Roehrig. Two small flakes to the petals ( ligules ) form a characteristic that botanists use to distinguish it from other genera of the subfamily. There are two circles, each with three, mostly free fertile stamens present; they are usually shorter than the petals. Three carpels are fused into one inferior ovary.

The flowers formula is:.

The fruits are berries; when ripe, they are often highly colored; here is dominated by red to blue. The fruits are of animals (especially birds, rare of Fledertieren and monkeys ) eaten. The seeds are excreted undigested and pass with the feces on branches.

System

The genus Aechmea in 1794 erected Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón y Jiménez in Flora Peruviana, et chilensis, P. 47. The genus name Aechmea Ruiz & Pav nom. cons. is according to the ICBN rules ( Vienna ICBN Art 14.4 & App. III) conserved over Hoiriri Adans. , who already July / August 1763 in Fam pl. 2, pp. 67, 584 was published. Other synonyms for Aechmea Ruiz & Pav are: Aechmaea Brongn, Cheavalliera, Chevaliera Gaudich. . ex Beer, Disquamia Lem. , Echinostachys Brongn. , Eriostax Raf., Gravisia Mez, Hoplophytum Beer, Beer Lamprococcus, Machrochordion DeVriese, Macro choir Dion de Vriese, Macrochordium Beer, Oechmea J.St. - Hil. , Ortgiesia rule Platyaechmea Baker, Podaechmea ( Mez ) LBSm. & Kress, Pothuava Gaudich. , Streptocalyx Beer, Wittmackia Mez.

The genus Aechmea was formerly divided into eight subgenera. The reactivation of the subgenus Chevaliera ( Gaudich. ex Beer) Baker to the genus Chevaliera Gaudich. ex Beer of the genus Aechmea was not recognized in the following processing. So it remains at eight subgenera:

  • Aechmea subgenus
  • Subgenus Chevaliera ( Gaudich. ex Beer) Baker: It contains only three species.
  • Subgenus Lamprococcus (Beer ) Baker
  • Subgenus Macro choir Dion ( de Vriese ) Baker
  • Subgenus Ortgiesia: The 21 species are native only in southeastern Brazil.
  • Subgenus Platyaechmea ( Baker) Baker (syn.: Aechmea subgen Hoplophytum (Beer ) Mez. )
  • Subgenus Podaechmea Mez
  • Subgenus Pothuava ( Baker) Baker
