Áedán mac Gabráin

Aidan mac Erc (also Aedan; * 530, † April 17 608/609 ) was of about 574 bis 608/609 King of the Irish-Scottish kingdom of Dalriada.

He was the son of the former King Erc and followed Conall I. to the throne, possibly after he first had to forcibly enforce against his brother Aegan; the coronation took place in Iona by the founder of the local monastery, Columba. Aidan built up a large fleet, with which he claimed to Man undertook campaigns ( by 583 against the King of Ulster ) and the Orkney Islands ( 580 ). 603 he was defeated at Daegsastan ( at Liddesdale? ) Against the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria under King Æthelfrith. In Ireland, he allied himself with the Ui Neill against King Baetan mac Cairell of Ulster. The Picts he defeated first by 590 at Leithri, but was defeated by this turn at 598 Circin.

To 608/609 followed Eochaid I. his father Aidan as heir to the throne. Aidan said to have been 74 years old at his death.
