Ælfric of Eynsham

Aelfric (* 955, † 1020) surnamed Grammaticus was one of the most important scholars of Anglo-Saxon Monasticism in the Early Middle Ages.

Aelfric grew up in the Winton monastery under Abbot Ethelwold and was around 971 monks of the Benedictine Abingdon. From Bishop Aelfnah of Winchester, he was sent in 987 for instructing the monks in the monastery Cornel. 1005 was Aelfric Abbot of Eynsham. In 1020 ( after Wilcox Ælfric 's prefaces: 1010) died at the age of 65 years Aelfric. Since he was already in the 19th century as one of the sponsors of the Anglo-Saxon literature, was founded in 1842 in his honor the Aelfric Society.
