The roof marking ( air code) of vehicles especially the fire brigade, the police, the emergency services and aid workers is the response of these vehicles by radio from the air. The roof marking the police in the UK consists of a symbol for the type of vehicle, a key figure for authority and an alphanumeric individual vehicle identification. Usually, the symbol and the authorities figure in a line and the vehicle identifier is shown in the next line.

The symbol for the type of vehicle means:

• Stern: Armed Response Vehicle ( ARV, patrol cars with armed police )
• County: Traffic / Incident Response Vehicle ( IRV, traffic police / accident recording)
• Triangle: Dog Support Unit (DSU, service dogs car)
• Square: Public Order ( riot police )
