Aero A.18

The Aero A.18 was a built by the Czech aircraft manufacturer Aero single-seat biplane fighter.

History

When A.18 there was a further development of the two-seater Aero A.11 with various changes in the area of the structure.

The machine is designed based on an order of a new single-seat fighter aircraft of the Czech Air Force.

So at Aero first three prototypes were labeled A.16, A.19 and A.20.

From the performance comparison of the three machines A.18 emerged as the winner and serial production began.

From A.18 20 copies were delivered to the Czech Air Force. The machines were powered by a BMW in-line engine of the type IIIa with an output of 136 kW ( 185 hp ), they were armed with two rigid, synchronized forward through the propeller circle firing Vickers machine guns.

Versions

Aero A.18B

This version was created from the basic model, as Aero in 1923 was due to attend a national air races. The A.18B had a shorter wingspan than the A.18 and of course, was unarmed. You won the race, but the other two participants crashed.

Aero A.18C

The A.18C also provided for racing was a stronger version of the motorized A.18B equipped with a 220 kW ( 300 hp) payable Walter -W -IV engine. For the machine to reach a top speed of 275 km / h and 1924 could win the race of the Czech Aero Club with an average speed of 261 km / h.
