Afet Ä°nan

Afet Inan (* 1908 in Thessaloniki, † June 8, 1985 in Ankara) was a Turkish historian and sociologist.

Life

Afet Inan was one of the adopted daughters of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. She was born in 1908 in Thessaloniki and then lived in the Ottoman Empire.

In 1925, she joined the Teachers College for girls from Bursa and began to work as a primary school teacher in Izmir. She met Mustafa Kemal for the first time in the same year in October during his visit to Izmir. Afet was sent in 1925 by Atatürk to Lausanne to learn the French language. In 1927, she went back and sat down for the establishment of the French " Notre Dame de Sion School for Girls " in Istanbul.

After the opening of the school, she was appointed secondary school history teacher. 1935 Afet Inan went back to Switzerland to study history at the University of Geneva. Upon her return she received in 1939 a Ph.D. in sociology. In 1950 she became a professor at the University of Ankara. She was co-founder and a leading member of Türk Tarih Kurumu, the Turkish History Institute.

Inan died on 8 June 1985 in Ankara. She left behind her husband Rifat, her daughter and her son Arı Demir.

The Afet Inan historical studies Prize is awarded every two years by the Turkish History Foundation in collaboration with the family Inan.
