Afourar

Afourar (also Afourer; Arabic: افورار ) is the third largest city in the province of Azilal in the region of Tadla- Azilal, Morocco.

Location

Afourar is located at the junction of the northern foothills of the High Atlas to the Tadla- plane at a height of almost 500 m above sea level. inst. , the small town is around 60 km ( driving distance ) away to the north of the provincial capital Azilal. The capital of the neighboring province of Beni Mellal is located about 30 km northeast.

Population

The population consists of 90 % of members from different Berber tribes from the mountains of the High Atlas. She has more than doubled due to the climatic and socio- culturally conditioned rural exodus since the 1960s.

Economy

Stand before the Agriculture in the center of economic activity, so play in the last decades and crafts, retail and transportation central roles in the economy of the city. Many men also work in the cities of the North or in Europe and contribute with their money transfers to the survival of their families.

Pumped storage power plant

In the mountains south of Afourar with financial support from the Arab Fund for Economic & Social Development in the years 2001 to 2004, the first pumped storage power plant in Morocco was completed, the water is taken from the Aït Ouarda reservoir. The upper reservoir is 1280 m high and has a capacity of 1.26 million cubic meters; the lower reservoir is only 480 m high and can hold the same amount of water. Two turbines generate up to 465 MW of electricity.
