African Orthodox Church

The African Orthodox Church is a Church in the United States, which was founded in 1919 by George Alexander McGuire in Chicago. McGuire was a priest of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America and the Church emphasizes today on characteristics of catholicity. The African Orthodox Church has about 15 districts and 5,000 members.

The establishment of the African Orthodox Church ( AOC) was intended to be self-contained as African-American Episcopal Church. The Episcopal rector George Alexander McGuire was consecrated in Chicago by Joseph René Vilatte on September 28, 1921 Bishop. The new church initially called Independent Episcopal Church; on their first conclave (House of Bishops ) on September 10, 1924, the renamed African Orthodox Church was completed.
