African Youth Championship

The U-20 African Cup of Nations (English African U -20 Championship ) or Junior Football African Cup is a football tournament between the best teams in Africa for male soccer players under 20. The competition is organized by the African Football Association Confédération africaine de football (CAF ). It takes place every two years and serves as a qualifying tournament for the Junior (U -20 ) Football World Cup, which since 1997 in each case the top four teams qualify for the World Cup when no African country is host. In the case of an African host is also the fifth best team can still qualify if the host is among the four best teams, such as 1999 as the Mali as the fifth African Cup of Nations participated in the World Cup in Nigeria and there reached third in the best position of all African teams.

Until 1989, the tournament was merely a qualification for the U- 20 World Cup and was discharged to the final with return games. Since 1991, following a qualification round, a tournament of the best eight teams for the title of African champions the Junior U -20 in a selected country.
