Afşin (pronounced Afschin ) is a town and a district in the province of Kahramanmaras in Turkey.

The city has claimed the population estimate from 2006 together with the region of about 90,000 inhabitants. Income is mainly generated in the agriculture and in recent years slowly developing industry.

Afşin is an ancient city with several ethnic groups, including Turks, Kurds, as well as Armenians and Circassians.

The larger villages that belong to Afşin are Aritas, Kasanli Koyu and Buyuk Tatlar Belediyesi. The village is mostly inhabited by Kurds Kasanli, in addition there are other villages with Kurdish population groups, including:

  • Oğlakkaya
  • Orenli
  • Incikoyu

The villages with a majority of Turkish population are

  • Buyuktatlar
  • Kucuktatlar
  • Kocova

Comuduz is mostly inhabited by Armenians.

In the area of the village Afşin is the square Eshab -i Keyfh, whose history goes back to ancient times.

History

The history of the region to 3000 BC The ancient name was Afşins Arabissos. Later the place also Efsus / Ephesus and Yarpuz said. Since 1944 he is called Afşin.

Throughout all the ages prevailed in Afşin the Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines and in between the Arabs. From Arabissos also Aramaic inscriptions have survived. In July 629, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius and the Persian general and later Great King Schahrbaraz met in Arabissos. After 1071 the Seljuks ruled over Afşin. From 1522 to 1922 Afşin belonged to the Ottoman Empire.
