Afyonkarahisar ( also briefly Afyon ) is a city in Turkey. With about 170,000 inhabitants, the Western Anatolia city is the administrative center of the province of Afyonkarahisar.

Geography and transport hub

Afyon is located about 250 km southwest of Ankara in a high level of the internal flow Akar, which branches out there in several side valleys. In the southeast, the highway and railway line runs from Istanbul to Konya.

It crosses in Afyon, the east-west route of the European route E96 ( İzmir - Salihli - Usak - Afyon - Emirdağ - Sivrihisar - Ankara) and branches in other directions, including to Burdur / Antalya.

Name and history

Afyon is the Turkish word for opium. The name under Seljuk rule was Karahisar -ı Sahib, the "Black Castle Sahib ". This goes back to the Seljuk vizier Sahip Ata, who had repaired the castle. The name component Afyon dates from the period after the founding of the Republic.

In the Castle of Afyon itself Hittite settlement traces can be detected. The city was in Roman and Byzantine times Akroinos or Akroinon. From its ancient history is little known. 740 defended the Byzantine emperor Leo III. the city in the Battle of Akroinon successfully against the Arabs. Under Kılıç Arslan I, the city was Seljuk. Since 1382 Afyon was part of the Ottoman Empire. Afyonkarahisar was the capital of a sanjak in the Ottoman Empire. It was its proximity to the independent Principality of Karaman of military importance and is mentioned in connection with various uprisings. During the National Liberation War, the Turkish army under Mustafa Kemal Pasha in the Battle of the hill in Afyon Kocatepe from August 26 to August 30, 1922 scored a decisive blow against the Greek troops ( Büyük Taaruz ). Thus, the rapid advance to the coast and the final victory was possible.

During an accident at a munitions depot of the city at least 25 soldiers arrived on September 6th, 2012 perished.
