Agabus
Agabus (Hebrew " grasshopper "; Greek Ἅγαβος hagabos ) was a prophet of Jerusalem at the time of the New Testament. The Acts of the Apostles calls him twice (Acts 11,28 and 21,10 ff.)
- The first time he comes to Antioch and says a great famine for the " whole world " ahead. This happened probably in the 4th year of Emperor Claudius ( AD 45 ). ( The famine is mentioned by Suetonius, Tacitus and Eusebius, in Jerusalem she was so bad that Josephus says that many starved to death. )
- The second time it occurs 13 years later (58 AD) and Paul says his capture by the Jews in Jerusalem ahead. As a sign he takes Paul's girdle and binds his hands and feet. Paul is arrested in Jerusalem by Roman soldiers after a riot took place among the Jews.
The tradition Agabus credited to the 72 disciples that Jesus in Luke 10.1 emits. He is said to have died as a martyr in Antioch.
