Agassizhorn

The Agassizhorn ( 3'946 m above sea level. M. ) is a mountain in the Bernese Alps in the extension of Nordwestgrats the Finsteraarhorn from which it ( 3'749 m) is less than 1.5 kilometers away and by the Agassizjoch separately. The shapely mountain stands in the shadow of its higher neighbors and is comparatively seldom climbed in spite of its nearly 4,000 meters above sea level. The mountain is named after the scientist Louis Agassiz.

The access leads from the Finsteraarhornhütten first westward down at the Fieschergletscher. From there it is on the eastern edge of the glacier up to behind his back, pulls down from the rocky spur P.3406. In a north-easterly direction to get the split -rich slopes up to Agassizjoch, from where you can reach the summit along the Südostgrats.

Louis Agassiz

Louis Agassiz, who is mainly known for its glacier research was in the 1840s in his research in the Bernese Alps on the go. More recently, Agassiz ' role was discussed as a race theorists and condemned his racist thinking. In 2007 it was proposed to rename the mountain to the Congolese slaves Renty in Rentyhorn.
