Agathon Léonard

Agathon Léonard or Léonard Agathon van der Weydeveld or Agathon van Weydeveldt ( born August 28, 1841 in Lille, † November 12, 1923 in Paris) is a sculptor of Belgian descent, who took French citizenship.

Life

Leonard began his studies at the Académie des beaux -arts de Lille and put this at the École nationale supérieure continued des Beaux-Arts de Paris. One of his teachers in Paris was Eugène Delaplanche. He settled in Paris after he had participated in the 1868 Salon. He was in 1887 a member of the Société des artistes français and exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français. In 1889 he won a silver medal at the Paris World Exhibition. In 1897 he became a member of Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1900 he was awarded at the World Exhibition in Paris a gold medal. He frequently exhibited throughout France and in 1900 was honored with the title of Knight of the Legion of Honour.

Art Nouveau

The style of Art Nouveau, known as Jugendstil in central Europe, was Léonard stylistic orientation regardless of whether he created bronze statues, figurines of porcelain, bisque or earthenware. From Léonard exclusively representations of women are known to have been executed by him in marble, ivory and quartz.

Today (2013 ) still south of Paris Malakoff, Hauts -de -Seine département existing bronze foundry Susse Fondeur worked among others for Léonard. For his characters with the theme The game with the scarf he was inspired by the American artist and dancer Loie Fuller.
