Agdash District

Ağdaş (also Agdash ) is a rayon in Azerbaijan. Capital is the city Ağdaş. The name means "White Stone " and comes from the white rock of the local mountains.

Geography

The rayon has an area of ​​1048 km ². The landscape is one in the south of the Great Plain of the River Kura, which forms the southwest border, and in the north to the southern edge of the Great Caucasus, the Bozdag Mountains, which reaches up to 700 m high. Other major rivers of the district are the Turanchay and Turyan. In Rayon is the Turanchay National Park. About 100 km ² of the rayon is wooded.

Economy

The region is dominated by agriculture. It is mainly cultivated cotton. There is also a food processing industry, material factories and engineering companies. The main gas pipeline runs through the rayon and the forestry is significant.

Population

The population consists of 98% of Azerbaijanis. Other ethnic groups are Lezginen, Kurds and Tats. The rayon had 2009 98.300 inhabitants.

Attractions

In the region several monuments from the 19th century and the ruins of the fortress of Surkhaygalasi exist.
