Aglycone

Is an aglycon in the chemical non- sugar component of a glycoside in which the glycosyl group is replaced by a hydrogen atom. Another synonym is Genin, since the designation of the carbohydrate- free aglycone usually ends on genin.

Example: Dioscin ( a steroidal glycoside or saponin ) was first discovered in Dioscorea species and named after them. The carbohydrate-free aglycone is called diosgenin and is a steroid derivative.

Related to anthocyanin glycosides of sugar-free component is also referred to as aglycon.
