Agona District

Agona District is one of 13 districts in the Central Region of Ghana. The district has the third highest population density in the Central Region. Nearly a third of the population lives in the capital Agona Swedru, the others in a total of 496 larger or smaller settlements.

Ethnic composition

THe original population of the district is part of the Akangruppe the Agona. The proportion of immigrant representatives of other ethnic groups is estimated to be between 10% and 30 % Obutu, Gomoa, Ewe, Effutu, Fanti, Kwahu, Atakpamé, Kontokori as well as different ethnic groups from northern Ghana. Agona Swedru side that has above average attracted many migrants due to its better earning opportunities in the public and private sector, the area of Otsenkorang still a high proportion of migrants due to the job opportunities in the cocoa industry. Here there are about three times as many migrants and their descendants as native Agona.

Religion

The district is predominantly Christian, and there are an Islamic minority and followers of traditional religions. Members of all religious denominations usually accept the traditional, local taboos relating to the field work or holidays.

Economy

64 % of the population work in agriculture. The fertile soils allow the commercial production of cocoa, lemon, palm oil and kola nuts. For the regional food supply maize, cassava, yams and vegetables are grown. However, a large part of the agricultural production is limited to subsistence farming.

About 10 % of the district area is forested, are used for forestry mahogany and Odumbaum.

The processing of agricultural products takes place in a limited way, including the production of native gin.
