Agwé

Agwe (also Agwe - Taroyo ) is a loa in the Voodoo religion, especially in Haiti. Agwe is married to Erzulie. Agwe is the ruler of the sea and its inhabitants as well as a patron saint of sailors and seamen. In the voodoo cult he appears in the uniform of a naval officer and military like discipline. As the Greek god Poseidon, he also appears with trident. Sailboat and fish are common symbols for him.

The annual festival is celebrated on the banks of Agwe lakes or on the ocean beach. On the open sea are brought sacrifices to him like a sheep.

In Voodoo, Agwe is syncretized with the Christian saints, Ulrich of Augsburg.

Agwe plays a role in the musical Once on This Iceland.
