Ahmad Bourghani

Ahmad Bourghani ( born 1959 in Tehran, † February 2nd 2008 ibid.; pers: احمد بورقانی فراهانی ) was an Iranian politician and journalist.

Career

Bourghani studied at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran Geography and graduated from the Bachelor. After the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979, he became a journalist. During the Iran - Iraq war, he was head of the news department of the Islamic Republic News Agency ( IRNA ). From 1990 to 1993 he was a correspondent for the IRNA Affairs of the United Nations in New York. In 1993 he returned to Iran.

During his brief time in 1998 as Deputy Minister of Culture in the government of Mohammed Khatami since the revolution of 1979 he made the first time for a press freedom. Even against the resistance of traditional people to ban the tried in court critical newspapers, he fought successfully. In February 1999, frustrated Bourghani stepped down from his position. Two years later he was elected to the Iranian parliament, in which he continued his goal, freedom of the press in Iran pursued. He was also chairman of the parliamentary group, which campaigned for a friendship between Italian and Iranian parliamentarians. He died in 2008 in a Tehran hospital of a heart attack.
