Ahmad Khani

Ehmedê XANI ( احمد خانی - Aḥmad -e Hani, * 1651, † 1707) was a Kurdish writer, scholar and poet. Some authors, he is regarded as the founder of the Kurdish nationalism.

XANI was born in the Turkish province of Hakkari today and belonged to the Eşiret XANI. He traveled in the different regions of Kurdistan and lived a long time in the Kurdish principality of Botan. XANI spoke Kurdish, Persian and Arabic. He wrote in 1683 a children's dictionary in rhyme entitled Nûbihar, the first Kurdish Primer for children. It includes 950 Arabic terms and their meaning in the Kurdish language.

His most famous work is the story of Mem û Zin, a love story from the year 1692nd The narrative comprises 2655 verses. Additionally, it includes a description of the Kurdish society of the 17th century.

Ehmedê XANI died in 1707 and was buried in a Türbe near the Ishak Pasha Palace in Doğubeyazıt.
