Ahmed Attaf

Ahmed Attaf (* July 10, 1953 in Ain defla, Ain defla Province) is an Algerian diplomat and politician.

Biography

Attaf began his career as a diplomat in the Foreign Ministry, where he was for a short time head of the department was multilateral treaties in 1977. In the same year he became head of the Department of Political Affairs of the OAU and then moved in 1979 as secretary to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City.

In 1982 he returned to Algeria and was Deputy Director of the United Nations, strategy and disarmament at the Foreign Ministry. Then he was there from 1984 to 1989 Director of International Politik.1989 he was appointed as ambassador to Yugoslavia and then after 1992 to 1994 as ambassador to India.

After his return he became Secretary of State for Cooperation and affairs of the Maghreb in March 1994. This office he retained even when he additionally in October 1994, government spokesman was. In January 1996 Attef was finally appointed as foreign minister in the government of Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia. This office he retained under Ouyahias successor as Prime Minister, Smail Hamdani from December 1998 by December 1999.

Attef was also voted in June 1997 to the deputies of the National People's Assembly.
