Aida ( pronunciation [ a.ida ] or [ a.ida ] ) is a female first name.

Origin and Meaning

The name with the pronunciation a.ida ( accent on the i) first appears in a story of the Egyptologist Auguste Mariette and may have been modeled on an ancient Egyptian name of the author. He became better known by the eponymous character in Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aida, which is based on the story of Mariette. The importance, however, is unclear.

In the Arabic-speaking world the name is assigned with the pronunciation a.ida ( emphasis on A). He then " visitors " or " income " according to Arab عائد ( ʿ ā ʾ id). A spelling variant is Ayda.

Dissemination

After the premiere of Verdi's opera in 1871 it took several years until the name of the heroine was included in the general naming. He's only been since the 20th century.
