Ailinglaplap Atoll

Ailinglaplap ( German outdated: Lambert Islands ) is an atoll in the Ralik chain of the Marshall Islands. The atoll has a triangular shape of 43 km in length and up to 30 km wide. Australia lies about 3,400 miles from Ailinglaplap away. The most important islands of the atoll are Airuk, Beran, Bikar, Buoj, Enewe, Ennak, Jabwan, Jeh, Kattiej, Mejajok, Mejil, Tobomaro and Woja.

History

In the language of Micronesian inhabitants of the Marshall Islands, the name Ailinglaplap means as much as the Big Island.

For Europeans, the island was discovered on 15 December 1792 by the English merchant Henry Bond.

End of the 19th century, the island, similar to other atolls, for the production of copra was used. Especially German merchants planted to coconut palms. The vegetation consists mainly of coconut trees today.

In the lower house of the Parliament of the Marshall Islands, two representatives of the atoll have a permanent mandate.
