55 of 57 atoll islands are located on the eastern atoll rim lined up like pearls on a string. The other two islands are relatively isolated on the south side of the atoll ( Enije ) and on the west corner ( Alkilwe or Aglue ).
The main islands of the atoll were all still inhabited in 1988 (10 ), with each village. In 1999, only seven inhabited islands ( clockwise from the north):
The population is increasingly concentrated on the main island Ailuk in the southeast. 1988 lived there 68 percent of the atoll population, in 1999 nearly 88 percent.
There are a total of three navigable passages into the lagoon. These lie in the northwest between Alkilwe and capes, from north to south: Eneneman, Marok and Erappu. The latter is the best passage. A small passage with the name Enije Channel lies between the islands Enije and Alkilwe in the southwest.
