The Aircraft Accident Investigation AAIB (French Bureau d' enquête sur les accidents d'aviation BEAA, Italian Ufficio d' inchiesta sugli Infortuni aeronautici UIIA, Romansh Uffizi d' inquisiziun by accidents d' Aviatica UIAA ) was established in 1960 by decision of the Swiss Parliament. Administratively, it was affiliated to the General Secretariat of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. The offices of the AAIB were on the Payerne military airfield. A former REGA helicopter (HB- XWC Agusta A109K2 ) served until 2012 as a service helicopter.

History

The Convention on International Civil Aviation requires that the signatory states to investigate the aviation accidents that occur within their territory. At the investigation, representatives of the countries can participate in the investigation, involving the construction of the affected aircraft, built, have been licensed or registered. The purpose of this investigation is to prevent future accidents. This task was performed in Switzerland by the AAIB.

As a supervisory authority may be involved by the adoption of inappropriate regulations or by failing in its obligations to the cause of an air accident, the ICAO recommends that aviation accidents are investigated by independent bodies. Therefore, the AAIB was not affiliated with the FOCA.

According to the ICAO, the sole purpose of the investigation, the accident prevention. Switzerland has attached here the caveat that the investigation report may be used in any possible court proceedings as evidence.
