Aircraft marshalling

A marshaler ( complete: Flightline Marshaller ( FLM ); German: Einwinker ) is a ground - traffic controller at airports. The workspace of a Flightline marshaler covers the entire ramp, including the taxiways of an airport, so the way to and from the airstrip, but not the runway.

Tasks

Aircraft parked at airports in specific, designated parking positions ( engl. parking spots) in order to allow a smooth loading and unloading as well as an unproblematic passenger traffic. Pilots who fly in from all over the world may not know, despite flight preparation, where must be precisely rolled up and parked. In order not to disturb the overall flight operations, therefore, the marshaler the pilot directly the way. This prevents errors and accidents.

A marshaler is not only responsible for keeping the aircraft on the apron and their positioning but also for the service of the individual machines, including fueling, fixing of the aircraft and for the handling. In addition, he is responsible security tasks on the apron.

Characteristics of a marshaler

The clothing of the marshaler usually consists of a jumpsuit with a vest in the warning colors of yellow or orange reflective material. At night called Flashlights (warning flash lights) are prescribed on the helmet. Further, it is for marshaler duty to wear hearing protection when operating aircraft engines. The pilot vehicle, which traveled by the marshaler on the apron long distances or running ahead of aircraft manufactures to follow-me car calls (German: Follow -me car).

Communication

Signs given the marshaler to the pilots

For contact with the airport oversight radios are used. Verbal communication between pilot and marshaller, however, is usually not possible. Therefore, the agreement with the pilots must be performed by standardized hand signals. A selection of possible hands is shown in the adjacent diagram. In many airports also be the hand movements with two glowing red rods or Kellen who holds the marshaler in the hands underlined. In the introduction to the final parking position the marshaler is before the end position of the aircraft so that he has visual contact with the pilot.

Character of the pilots at the marshaler

It is also in the reverse direction, from the pilot to the marshaler characters are necessary. Since the pilot sits, are given with arms and hands from him sign. The characters must be clearly recognizable to the marshaler. It may be necessary to take the help of a light source in the sign production.

The following characters can for example be given by the pilot:

  • Brakes are applied
  • Brakes are released
  • Submit brake pads
  • Remove brake pads
