Aire-sur-la-Lys

Aire -sur -la -Lys (Dutch Ariën aan de Leie ) is a commune with 9874 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Pas -de- Calais, in the Nord -Pas -de- Calais; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint- Omer, and is the administrative center of the canton of Aire -sur -la -Lys. The municipality belongs to the Communauté de communes du community association pays d' Aire.

Geography

Here ends the Canal d' Aire and is continued in Canal de Neuffossé which bypasses the city to the north. Both belong to a chain of channels that have been developed for ships with a cargo capacity of up to 3000 tons and the Dunkirk -Scheldt Großschifffahrtsweg forms. The original route of the channels has passed through the town and is still preserved as a city harbor. History

  • The parish church of St- Pierre d' Aire -sur -la -Lys is a mostly built at the site of a dilapidated former building in the 16th century in late Gothic Flamboyant style former collegiate.
