Airén

Airen is a white grape that is grown exclusively in Spain. Is set in Andalusia also Lairén or aide and in La Mancha it is usually referred to as Valdepeñas or Manchego. This vine has more than 305,000 ha (as of 2004), the geographically most widely planted grape variety in the world for wine production and behind the Sultana grape variety with the second largest vineyard at all. Your acreage is understood, however much in decline. In the late 1980s it was still more than 476 300 ha is planted Yet along with this vine more than a third of the Spanish vineyards, or almost twice the total vineyard area in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

This is partly because it is specifically in her home in La Mancha and Valdepeñas, with exceptionally large floor intervals, only 1,200 to 1,600 vines per hectare, planted and mostly educated in low bush form. In other wine-growing areas, the stock density is 5,000 to 10,000 vines / hectare. It is relatively undemanding and highly resistant to heat and drought. This makes it ideal for growing in hot climates. Airen is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.

From the vine pale yellow, neutral wine is made with a high alcohol content. This was traditionally both for white wine and for red wine production (mostly in central Spain ), often with dark grapes, such as Tempranillo, used to produce a light red wine in a blend. This technique produced wines are often very rustic, susceptible to oxidation and of inferior quality. They are still used mostly as a base wine for distillation of Spanish brandies.

Only through the modern cellar technology of recent times, such as temperature control and the controlled fermentation related, Airen is fermented too fresh, dry, quick to drinking white wines. There are also experiments with wine aging in oak barrels. In several respects, the Spanish grape with the French Ugni Blanc are compared, which is used in Cognac production.
