AISA I-115

The AISA I- 115 was a two-seat trainer aircraft of the Spanish manufacturer Aeronáutica Industrial SA from the 1950s.

Development

The AISA I- 115 was the military version of the civilian single engine training aircraft I-11, which was designed with side by side seats in 1948. The first I-11 flew in 1951 and was intended to replace the obsolete trainer Bücker Jungmann type. The aircraft was designed by Iberavia, it was built by AISA. Later Iberavia was bought by AISA. However, the Spanish Air Force preferred tandem seats for his trainer aircraft, so that the I-11 was developed for I- 115. The I -115 inherited the tailwheel landing gear of the production version of the I-11, which was sold as an I- 11B, but had a longer fuselage. The machine also had a slightly larger wingspan and was much heavier. These changes require more power, so that in the I- 115 is a 112 kW ( 150 hp) ENMA Tigre - series engine was installed, the only available in Spain at this time engine of this class. The first prototype flew on 16 June 1952. Built the aircraft was in Carabanchel, near Cuatro Vientos.

Construction

The designed as a cantilever low-wing monoplane I- 115 had a monocoque fuselage in wood construction. The one-piece wing with two spars was built entirely of wood, with the Sperrholzbeplankung could absorb some of the forces. Only ailerons and flaps were covered with fabric. The wing pointed at the root to a depth of 1.96 m, which decreased toward the tip to 0.98 m. The V- position was 6 °, the setting angle of 3 °. The ailerons were differentially operated and fell when the slotted flaps were lowered. The rudder was almost rectangular. The elevators were more tapered and provided with trim tabs. The tandem cockpits were sealed with a long glass dome that had independent sections for both teachers and students. All ads were duplicates and they also contained the instruments for blind flying training. The solid spur wheel chassis was undisguised, the tailwheel was steerable.

Use

About 200 I- 115 were to the Spanish Air Force, 150 of them in the spring of 1956, delivered. At that time there was an order for a further 150 copies. Supposedly have been produced up to 450 pieces. They were initially known as Type EE 6 EE is called Escuela Elemental or basic training, but when the category has been renamed, the I- 115 was referred to as E-9 (according to other sources than E.6, E stands for Entrenamiento or coach ). The E-9 was in service from 1956 to 1976, but was only in 1988 that finally decommissioned CASA 1131 ( built under license Bücker Jungmann ) never replace, but was operated in parallel. Despite the long use time, there have been regular criticism of their flight behavior and the high Weight: Of the soldiers, the aircraft " Garrapata " were mentioned ( tick ) because they had a tendency to be very difficult from the ground, its host to resolve at the start, . Some late models were therefore equipped with de Havilland Gipsy Major engine ( 145 hp ) and others with the Lycoming O -435 -A ( 190 hp).

Many I- 115 were sold at the end of their military service to civilians, there are currently few in museums and historic flying clubs exist and are restored.
