Aiseau -Presles ( Walloon Åjhô - Prele ) is a municipality in the east of the Belgian province of Hainaut. It includes the villages of Aiseau, Pont -de- Loup, Roselies and Presles.

The neighboring communities of Aiseau -Presles are Châtelet, Farciennes, Fosses- la -Ville, Gerpinnes and Sambreville.

History

The place Aiseau was first mentioned in the year 952. 1192 here an Augustinian monastery ( Abbaye d' Oignies ) was founded. Around 1250, Jacques de Vitry wrote here his work De Vita Mariae beatae Oigniacensis about the Beguine Mary of Oignies. Maria had established a Beguine community in the same place, and after her death, her tomb at the monastery was a place of pilgrimage. The monastery was dissolved in the wake of the French Revolution in 1796 and sold. After 1837 was in the monastery buildings, a glass factory. 1973, the east wing of the monastery was completely destroyed by fire.

Attractions

In the district of Pont -de- Loup, the tower of the Romanesque church from the late 11th century has survived. Furthermore, the castle of the d' Oultremont family in Presles of interest, which was built in the 19th century. It is just like the English castle gardens but not accessible to the public.

Twinning

Aiseau -Presles twinned with the French town Pomérols in the Languedoc -Roussillon region.
