Aison (vase painter)

Aeson ( ancient Greek Αἴσων ) was a vase painter of the Attic red-figure - style. Its about 60 traditional vessels originate from the period 435-415 BC.

He spent his career in several pottery workshops, where he stood with several other well-known vase painters in contact. His first works, Ephebenbilder, he created in the same workshop as the Kodros painter. The first signed superb bowl with designs from the Theseus legend, which is now in the Archaeological Museum in Madrid Nacional, he created in the same workshop, in which the Penthesilea Painter worked and Aristophanes was his successor. In the third workshop, he worked with the Shuvalov Painter and the Eretria Painter. Here he painted mainly closed vessels. All three artists were obviously in the tradition of Polygnotos. From this period dates his second showpiece, a Bauchlekythos in the Naples National Archaeological Museum. Subject is a standing in the tradition of Parthenos Shield Battle of the Amazons here.

Two other lekythoi ( now in the Louvre and in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens) clearly indicate a turn of the painter to the Adonis cult. His style starts here get closer to the rich style, which his pupil, the Meidias painter should continue later. Blurred As the beginning of the career in Kodros painter with time, the limits of representation with the Meidias painter and partly fall hard unambiguous assignments of work. It is especially difficult when Choenkannen with Dionysian motifs. In science, it is therefore also attributed to the Meidias circle.

What is striking is the difference in quality of his work, which is probably on the restless life change, which is reflected in the frequent workshop changes, attributed in the first place. However, a contempt often shown in science for the entire work does not do justice Aeson.
