Aiulf I of Benevento

Ajo I. († 642 at Siponto ) was 641-642 Duke of Benevento.

Life

Ajo was the son of Arichis I. 641 and was succeeded him as Duke of Benevento, although Arichis had determined shortly before his death Ajo drawing Raduald brothers and Grimoald to his successors.

Since Ajo was apparently mentally incompetent, the Duchy had to be administered by a regency of his foster brothers and Raduald Grimoald. In 642 Slavic marauders landed near Siponto on the Adriatic coast. Ajo went personally to to drive at the head of his troops the invaders, but he fell with his horse in one of the excavated by the Slavs to their camp pitfalls, where he was overpowered and slain by them.

As Raduald of Ajo's death learned came over and he drove the Slavs. Thereupon Raduald Ajo's successor.
