Aiviekste River

The Aiviekste

The Aiviekste ( German EWST or Awex ) is a river in Latvia. After the catchment area it is the largest tributary of the Daugava.

The river originates from the Luban Lake, takes on the main waters Ostlettlands and forms the border between Vidzeme and Latgale. The mouth of the Daugava at Pļaviņas is flooded after the construction of a hydropower plant.

The catchment area is covered by forests and vast wetlands. In spring, the Aiviekste appears regularly on its banks and flooded large areas of shallow wetlands. To reduce the back flow into the Luban Lake, partially dams and canals were built. The largest tributaries are Pededze, Balupe un ica.
